Aglaonema modestum ‘Green’
Aglaonema modestum ‘Green’ is a classic terrestrial aroid with broad, rich green leaves and a sturdy, upright growth habit. It is well suited for paludariums, ripariums, and terrariums, where its roots can stay consistently moist while the foliage remains above water.
? Aquarium (Fully Submerged) – Not Suitable
- Do NOT submerge this plant.
- Aglaonema is a terrestrial aroid.
- Fully submerging it will cause rot within weeks.
- It cannot adapt to submerged growth like Anubias or Cryptocoryne.
✔️ Paludarium / Riparium (Best Option)
This is where Aglaonema modestum ‘Green’ really shines. Its strong roots and forgiving nature make it ideal for semi-aquatic builds.
- Growth style: Roots wet, leaves above water
- Planting options:
- Soil pocket
- Rock crevice filled with substrate
- Mesh pot hidden behind hardscape
- Allow roots to grow downward toward the water column
Lighting: Low to medium light
Note: Too much light can cause leaf burn.
Humidity: Moderate to high (50–80%). This plant is very forgiving compared to many terrarium-only species.
✔️ Terrarium / Vivarium Use
An excellent choice for larger terrariums or vivariums, where it provides height and lush foliage.
- Substrate: Well-draining mix (ABG, coco fibre + bark + charcoal)
- Planting: Do not bury the stem deeply
- Watering: Keep moist, not soggy — allow the top layer to breathe
- Growth habit: Upright and clumping
- Placement: Midground to background
⚠️ Not ideal for very small dart frog enclosures unless heavily pruned.
❌ What Not to Do
- Do not plant the crown underwater
- Do not seal it in stagnant, airless substrate
- Do not expose it to high-intensity aquarium LEDs
✂️ Prep Before Planting (Important)
If your plant arrives in a pot:
- Remove all rockwool
- Rinse roots thoroughly
- Trim any damaged or mushy roots
- Optional: rinse leaves to remove nursery residue
? Animal Safety Note
- Toxic if eaten (contains calcium oxalates)
- Safe for frogs, reptiles, and fish (they do not consume it)
- Keep away from herbivorous reptiles
Aglaonema modestum ‘Green’ is a durable, visually clean plant when used correctly. Treat it as a terrestrial aroid, not an aquarium plant, and it will thrive for years.
