Echinodorus martii ‘Ruffle Sword’
Echinodorus martii ‘Ruffle Sword’ is a classic sword plant known for its long, flowing leaves with distinct ruffled edges. It creates strong movement and volume in planted aquariums, making it an excellent background or feature plant in larger Aquascaping layouts.
Acclimation note: Like most Echinodorus species, older leaves may melt or yellow after shipping or when introduced to a new aquarium. This is normal. Once established, the plant will push out
new, healthy leaves from the crown.
Tip: White roots and fresh center growth are strong indicators the plant is healthy and ready to continue growing.
Why Aquascapers Like It
- Ruffled, flowing leaves that add motion and texture to large layouts
- Impressive size ideal for filling background space
- Hardy and reliable once established
- Natural focal plant for classic and nature-style Aquascaping
- Excellent contrast against finer-leaf stems and carpets
Care & Placement
- Placement: Background (best suited for medium to large aquariums)
- Planting: Plant into substrate and keep the crown above the substrate to avoid rot.
- Lighting: Low to moderate (higher light encourages faster, larger growth)
- CO₂: Optional, but can improve growth speed and leaf size
- Feeding: Heavy root feeder—nutrient-rich substrate and root tabs are strongly recommended
- Maintenance: Remove older outer leaves as needed to maintain shape and circulation
Aquascaping Tips
- Give this plant space—its leaves look best when allowed to arch naturally.
- Use it as a background anchor behind driftwood or stone hardscape.
- Pair with low-growing foreground plants to emphasize its height and flow.
