Description

Hygroryza aristata

Hygroryza aristata is an uncommon floating aquatic plant with soft green, grass-like leaves that spread horizontally across the water surface. Its unique growth form and trailing roots make it a distinctive option for open-top aquariums, paludariums, and pond-style displays where surface detail and gentle shade are desired.

Portion size: Plants are supplied as loose floating portions measuring approximately 3–4 inches. As a floating species, size and shape may vary slightly depending on growth conditions.

Why Aquascapers Use It

  • Uncommon floating plant with a natural, grassy appearance
  • Provides surface coverage without forming a tight mat too quickly
  • Trailing roots add visual interest and offer shelter for fish and shrimp
  • Helps diffuse light for shaded areas below
  • Well suited for open-top layouts and nature-style Aquascaping

Care & Use

  • Placement: Floating on the water surface
  • Lighting: Low to moderate (strong light can encourage faster spread)
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Flow: Gentle surface movement preferred
  • Maintenance: Thin as needed to prevent excess surface coverage

Aquascaping Notes

  • Best used in tanks with open swimming space and calm surface conditions.
  • Works well in paludariums and ripariums where surface plants are part of the design.
  • Allow room for lateral growth, as it spreads outward rather than upward.
