Description

Echinodorus 'Red Rubin'

Echinodorus 'Red Rubin' is a bold, red sword plant that adds rich colour and broad-leaf structure to planted aquariums. It works beautifully as a midground-to-background focal point, especially in nature-style Aquascaping where strong contrast and leaf shape help anchor the layout.

Acclimation note: Sword plants commonly shed older leaves after shipping or when introduced to a new aquarium. This is normal. Focus on the crown and roots—once settled, new leaves will emerge and the plant will build momentum.
Tip: White roots and fresh new growth are strong indicators the plant is healthy and ready to continue growing in its new environment.

Why Aquascapers Like It

  • Deep red to ruby tones for strong contrast against green plants
  • Broad leaves that create a natural focal point in the layout
  • Great “anchor” plant for midground/background composition
  • Hardy growth habit once established
  • Excellent for larger tanks and open-space scapes

Care & Placement

  • Placement: Midground to background (best in medium to large aquariums)
  • Planting: Plant into substrate and keep the crown above the substrate line to prevent rot.
  • Lighting: Moderate to high for stronger colour and tighter growth
  • COâ‚‚: Optional, but recommended for faster growth and improved colour consistency
  • Feeding: Heavy root feeder—use a nutrient-rich substrate and/or root tabs
  • Maintenance: Remove older outer leaves as needed to keep the plant clean and encourage new growth

Aquascaping Tips

  • Place it slightly off-centre to create a natural focal point without overpowering the composition.
  • Pair with fine-leaf stems and carpeting plants to make the broad red leaves stand out.
  • Give it room—this plant looks best when its leaf shape isn’t crowded by hardscape.
