Cryptocoryne crispatula 'Balansae' is a classic freshwater aquarium plant known for its long, narrow leaves and distinctive rippled or hammered texture. As the foliage matures, the leaves can become long and flowing, creating beautiful movement and making Balansae an excellent background plant for medium to large planted aquariums.
Unlike fast-growing stem plants that require frequent trimming, Cryptocoryne Balansae grows from a central rosette and gradually develops an established root system beneath the substrate. Its tall, ribbon-like foliage looks especially impressive behind rocks and driftwood or along the rear corners of an aquascape.

Placement: Best suited to the background, where its long foliage has room to develop naturally.
Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is generally sufficient.
CO₂: Not required, although supplemental CO₂ can encourage stronger and more vigorous growth.
Substrate: A nutrient-rich planted aquarium substrate is recommended.
Fertilization: As a strong root-feeding plant, Balansae benefits from nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab supplementation.
Maintenance: Remove older or damaged outer leaves near the base and avoid repeatedly relocating the plant once its root system has become established.

Your Cryptocoryne Balansae may arrive potted or bundled. Preparation is slightly different depending on the format, but both should ultimately be planted directly into the aquarium substrate.
The long, textured foliage of Cryptocoryne Balansae makes it particularly effective for adding height and movement to the background of an aquascape. Mature leaves can rise vertically before arching naturally through the aquarium, helping soften the appearance of large rocks and driftwood.
Try planting Balansae along the rear corners or behind a prominent hardscape feature. Its narrow foliage provides excellent contrast against broad-leaved plants such as Anubias and Echinodorus, while its distinctive texture helps it stand apart from traditional background stem plants.
Injected CO₂ is not required to grow Cryptocoryne Balansae successfully. This makes it an excellent option for lower-tech planted aquariums where a tall, dramatic background plant is desired without relying on a pressurized CO₂ system.
Supplemental CO₂ can still improve growth when combined with adequate nutrients and lighting. More importantly, Balansae appreciates a nutritious root zone and stable aquarium conditions. Once established, avoid unnecessarily uprooting or relocating the plant.
