Black Rili Shrimp are a distinctive colour variety of Neocaridina davidi, characterized by contrasting black pigmentation and translucent or nearly clear sections of the body. Their bold Rili pattern gives them a unique appearance that stands out beautifully in planted aquariums, shrimp tanks, and nano setups.
Peaceful and active, Black Rili Shrimp spend much of their day grazing across plants, mosses, driftwood, rocks, and substrate in search of biofilm, soft algae, microorganisms, and edible organic material.
Like other Neocaridina varieties, Black Rili Shrimp are relatively adaptable when maintained in a mature, stable aquarium. Their manageable care requirements, small adult size, and ability to reproduce entirely in freshwater make them suitable for both newer shrimp keepers and experienced hobbyists.
Aquarium: A mature, fully cycled freshwater aquarium with stable water conditions is recommended.
Temperature: Approximately 18–26°C (64–79°F).
pH: Approximately 6.5–7.8.
Water: Stable freshwater with adequate mineral content to support healthy moulting.
Filtration: Gentle filtration is recommended. Sponge filters or an intake protected with an appropriate pre-filter sponge are excellent choices for shrimp aquariums.
Feeding: Naturally grazes biofilm, microorganisms, soft algae, and organic material. Supplement with quality shrimp food when required.

Rili shrimp are selectively bred for a distinctive pattern in which areas of strong pigmentation are interrupted by translucent or nearly clear sections of the body.
Black Rili Shrimp display dark pigmentation contrasted against these translucent areas. The exact amount, placement, and intensity of the black coloration can vary, meaning individual shrimp within a colony will not necessarily look identical.
Black Rili Shrimp thrive in established planted aquariums containing plenty of surfaces for natural grazing. Mosses, Bucephalandra, Anubias, driftwood, stone, and other textured surfaces provide areas where biofilm and microorganisms can develop.
Dense plants and mosses also provide valuable shelter for juvenile shrimp and freshly moulted adults while creating additional grazing areas throughout the aquarium.
Black Rili Shrimp are omnivorous grazers and spend much of their day picking at aquarium surfaces for biofilm, microorganisms, soft algae, and edible organic matter.
A quality shrimp food can be offered to supplement their natural diet. Feed conservatively, particularly in smaller aquariums, as excessive uneaten food can negatively affect water quality.
Black Rili Shrimp reproduce entirely in freshwater. Mature females carry eggs beneath the abdomen until the young hatch as miniature shrimp.
A mature aquarium with mosses, dense plants, and established biofilm provides young shrimp with both shelter and access to naturally occurring food.
Black Rili Shrimp can interbreed with other colour varieties of Neocaridina davidi. This includes Cherry, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Green, Chocolate, Snowball, and other Rili varieties.
If maintaining the Black Rili colour line is important, keeping them separately from other Neocaridina colour varieties is recommended. Crossbreeding can result in unpredictable colour and pattern combinations, and later generations may not retain the desired Black Rili appearance.
Shrimp can be sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and water chemistry. Introduce Black Rili Shrimp to a mature, fully cycled aquarium and acclimate them gradually to their new water conditions.
Ammonia and nitrite should remain undetectable. Maintaining stable conditions is generally more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium in an attempt to achieve one exact parameter.
