Batman Nerite Snail (Neritina auriculata) is a distinctive freshwater aquarium snail recognized for its unusual shell shape and excellent algae-grazing behaviour. Its unique appearance gives this Nerite its memorable "Batman" name and makes it an interesting alternative to more commonly available Nerite snails.
Like other Nerite snails, Batman Nerites spend much of their time exploring aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood, and other hard surfaces in search of algae and biofilm. They are particularly useful in planted aquariums where aquarists want a natural algae grazer that will not damage healthy aquatic plants.
Batman Nerite Snails are also popular because they will not reproduce successfully in a typical freshwater aquarium. Females may occasionally deposit small white eggs on hard surfaces, but the larvae require different conditions to develop, preventing the aquarium from becoming overrun with snails.

One of the main reasons aquarists keep Nerite snails is their appetite for naturally occurring algae and biofilm. Batman Nerites continuously explore hard surfaces throughout the aquarium, grazing as they move across glass, rocks, driftwood, and aquarium decorations.
They are best considered part of an aquarium's overall maintenance crew rather than a replacement for normal aquarium maintenance. Providing stable water conditions and enough natural food is important for their long-term health.
Batman Nerite Snails will not establish a reproducing population in a typical freshwater aquarium. This is one of the biggest advantages of keeping Nerites compared with many other freshwater aquarium snails.
Individual white eggs may still appear on aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood, or equipment. These eggs do not normally develop into baby Nerite snails under standard freshwater aquarium conditions.
Healthy shell development depends on suitable water chemistry and access to minerals, particularly calcium. Very soft or acidic water can gradually contribute to shell erosion or deterioration, so Nerite snails generally perform best when adequate mineral content is available.
A stable, mature aquarium is strongly preferred over a newly established tank. New aquariums may contain very little natural algae or biofilm, leaving the snail without enough food even when the water itself is properly cycled.
When introducing a new Nerite snail, avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry. Gradual acclimation helps reduce stress when moving the snail from its shipping water into your aquarium.
After introduction, a Nerite may remain inactive for a period of time before beginning to explore. Place the snail upright with its opening against a solid surface so it can easily attach and begin moving when ready.
