The Red Pumpkin Nerite Snail is a colourful freshwater algae grazer prized for its beautiful pumpkin-orange to reddish shell and naturally variable markings. Small, peaceful, and constantly on the move, these nerites make an excellent addition to planted aquariums where they provide both visual interest and practical algae control.
Red Pumpkin Nerites spend much of their time grazing surfaces throughout the aquarium, including glass, stone, driftwood, and other hardscape. Their compact size makes them particularly useful in planted and nano aquariums where a small clean-up crew is preferred.
One of the biggest attractions of the Red Pumpkin Nerite is its shell. Colouration can range from pumpkin-orange and reddish tones to pinkish or lighter shades, often accompanied by contrasting spots, scribbles, or irregular markings.
Every snail is naturally different. Shell colour, pattern, intensity, size, and markings will vary from the photographs shown, making each Red Pumpkin Nerite unique.
Red Pumpkin Nerites are active surface grazers that continuously search the aquarium for naturally occurring algae and biofilm. They can be seen moving across aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood, and other hard surfaces, leaving small cleaned pathways behind as they feed.
They are especially useful in established planted aquariums where natural algae and biofilm are already available. A nerite should not be introduced solely as a substitute for normal aquarium maintenance, but it can make an excellent addition to a balanced clean-up crew.
Difficulty: Easy
Temperature: Approximately 20–26°C
pH: Approximately 6.5–8.0
Adult Size: Approximately 1–2 cm
Diet: Primarily algae and naturally occurring biofilm; supplemental algae-based foods may be offered when natural food is limited.
Temperament: Peaceful
A mature, cycled aquarium with stable water conditions is recommended. Nerite snails benefit from water containing sufficient minerals to maintain healthy shell growth. Very soft or persistently acidic water can contribute to gradual shell erosion.
In an established aquarium, Red Pumpkin Nerites spend much of their time grazing naturally occurring algae and biofilm. Aquariums that are exceptionally clean or newly established may not provide enough natural food.
If algae becomes limited, supplemental algae-based foods and other suitable snail foods can be offered. Maintaining appropriate mineral availability is also important for long-term shell health.
Nerite snails are popular with aquarists because they will not establish a reproducing population in a normal freshwater aquarium. Their larvae require different conditions to complete development.
Individual nerites may still deposit small, hard, pale-coloured egg capsules on aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood, and other hard surfaces. These may remain visible for some time, but they will not develop into a population of baby nerite snails under normal freshwater aquarium conditions.
