API KH Carbonate Hardness Test Kit

API KH Carbonate Hardness Test Kit provides a convenient and reliable way to measure the carbonate hardness (KH) of your aquarium water. Carbonate hardness plays an important role in maintaining stable pH levels by helping buffer the water against sudden changes in acidity.

Designed for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums, this liquid test kit helps aquarists monitor an essential water parameter that can affect the health and stability of their aquarium environment.

Whether you maintain a planted aquarium, shrimp tank, or community aquarium, regularly monitoring KH can help you better understand your water chemistry and make informed decisions about aquarium maintenance.

Help Maintain Stable Aquarium pH Measure your aquarium's carbonate hardness to better understand its buffering capacity and help prevent unexpected pH fluctuations. Suitable for freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

What Is Carbonate Hardness (KH)?

Carbonate hardness (KH), also referred to as alkalinity in aquarium keeping, measures the water's ability to neutralize acids and resist changes in pH. It is primarily associated with bicarbonate and carbonate ions dissolved in the water.

Water with higher KH generally has greater buffering capacity, while water with lower KH may be more susceptible to pH fluctuations.

Monitoring KH is particularly important in aquariums using active aquasoil, remineralized reverse osmosis (RO) water, or COâ‚‚ injection systems.

Key Features

  • Measures Carbonate Hardness: Helps determine the buffering capacity of aquarium water.
  • Supports pH Stability: Provides valuable information for managing water chemistry and preventing unexpected pH changes.
  • Liquid Reagent Testing: Uses a colour-change titration method to measure KH.
  • Freshwater & Saltwater: Suitable for both aquarium environments.
  • Ideal for Planted Aquariums: Useful when monitoring COâ‚‚ injection, aquasoil systems, and water changes.
  • Useful for Shrimp Keepers: Helps monitor carbonate hardness when preparing or adjusting aquarium water.
  • Easy-to-Read Results: Provides results expressed in degrees of carbonate hardness (dKH).

Why Is KH Important?

Aquarium Application Why Monitor KH?
Planted Aquariums Helps assess water buffering capacity, particularly in systems using COâ‚‚ injection or active aquasoil.
Shrimp Aquariums Useful for monitoring water chemistry when keeping species with different carbonate hardness requirements.
Community Aquariums Helps identify changes in buffering capacity that may influence pH stability.
RO Water Preparation Helps verify carbonate hardness after remineralizing purified water.
Saltwater Aquariums Useful for monitoring alkalinity, an important parameter in marine aquarium water chemistry.

How to Use the API KH Test Kit

  1. Rinse the test tube with aquarium water and fill to the 5 mL mark.
  2. Hold the KH reagent bottle vertically and add one drop to the test tube.
  3. Cap and invert the test tube to mix the solution.
  4. Continue adding reagent one drop at a time, mixing between drops, until the solution changes from blue to yellow.
  5. Count the total number of drops required to complete the colour change.
  6. Each drop represents approximately 1 degree of carbonate hardness (1 dKH), equivalent to approximately 17.9 ppm as CaCO₃.

Always follow the instructions supplied with the test kit, as manufacturer procedures may be updated.

Important: KH and GH Are Different Measurements KH measures the buffering capacity of aquarium water, while GH measures the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Both parameters are important, but they serve different purposes. This product measures KH only and does not test general hardness (GH).

Aquascaper's Tip

In planted aquariums using active aquasoil, KH may naturally decrease as the substrate buffers the water. This is not necessarily a problem. Rather than trying to maintain a universal KH target, choose water parameters appropriate for your fish, shrimp, and plants, and focus on keeping conditions stable.

Monitor your aquarium's buffering capacity and maintain better control over water chemistry with the API KH Carbonate Hardness Test Kit, available in Canada at Aquascaperoom.
