Amano Shrimp are famous among planted aquarium keepers for their constant grazing behaviour. White Amano Shrimp spend much of their time searching plant leaves, rocks, driftwood, substrate, and aquarium equipment for algae, biofilm, and edible organic material.

They can be particularly useful as part of a balanced aquarium maintenance routine. However, no shrimp should be considered a substitute for appropriate lighting, nutrient management, water changes, and regular aquarium maintenance.

Perfect for Planted Aquariums

White Amano Shrimp are particularly well suited to planted aquariums and aquascapes. Dense planting, mosses, rocks, and driftwood provide shelter while dramatically increasing the surface area available for natural grazing.

Their white coloration can also provide striking contrast against green aquatic plants and dark aquascaping materials, making them easier to spot than traditional translucent Amano Shrimp in many layouts.

Feeding White Amano Shrimp

In established aquariums, White Amano Shrimp naturally spend much of the day grazing. Their diet can include algae, biofilm, microorganisms, and decomposing organic matter.

When natural food is limited, supplement with quality shrimp food, algae-based foods, or other appropriate sinking foods. Feed conservatively and avoid allowing uneaten food to accumulate, as maintaining stable water quality is especially important when keeping shrimp.

Will White Amano Shrimp Breed in Freshwater?

Although adult Amano Shrimp live in freshwater, they have a very different reproductive cycle from Neocaridina shrimp such as Cherry Shrimp.

Females can carry eggs in freshwater, but the newly hatched larvae require brackish to marine conditions during their development. As a result, White Amano Shrimp will not establish a self-sustaining population in a typical freshwater aquarium.

Acclimating White Amano Shrimp

Shrimp can be sensitive to rapid changes in temperature and water chemistry. Introduce White Amano Shrimp to a fully cycled, stable aquarium and acclimate them gradually before release.

Avoid introducing shrimp into an aquarium with detectable ammonia or nitrite, and use caution with aquarium medications or treatments containing copper or other ingredients that may be unsafe for invertebrates.
