Description

Seachem Acid Buffer – Freshwater Aquarium pH Reducer

Seachem Acid Buffer is a phosphate-free pH-adjusting conditioner specifically designed for freshwater planted aquariums. It effectively lowers aquarium pH by reducing carbonate alkalinity (KH), helping aquarists create water conditions suitable for plants and fish that prefer more acidic environments.

Unlike phosphate-based buffering products, Seachem Acid Buffer contains no phosphate, making it particularly suitable for planted aquarium systems where unnecessary phosphate additions may be undesirable.

Acid Buffer can be used independently to lower pH or together with Seachem Alkaline Buffer to help establish a targeted pH and buffering balance.

Phosphate-Free pH Control for Planted Aquariums Lower pH, reduce carbonate alkalinity, and manage freshwater aquarium chemistry without introducing phosphate. Ideal for aquarists who need greater control over their source water and planted aquarium conditions.

Key Features

  • Lowers Aquarium pH: Helps create more acidic freshwater conditions.
  • Phosphate-Free Formula: Does not introduce additional phosphate into the aquarium.
  • Designed for Planted Aquariums: Suitable for freshwater systems where phosphate-free pH adjustment is preferred.
  • Reduces Carbonate Alkalinity: Converts KH into available CO₂ as pH is lowered.
  • Flexible pH Management: Can be combined with Seachem Alkaline Buffer to target specific pH values.
  • Useful for Alkaline Source Water: Helps aquarists adjust water with elevated pH and carbonate hardness.
  • Multiple Sizes Available: Choose the container size that suits your aquarium maintenance needs.

Available Sizes

Size Recommended For
70 g Occasional adjustments, smaller aquariums, or trying the product for the first time.
300 g Regular aquarium maintenance and ongoing water preparation.
600 g Larger aquariums, multiple aquarium systems, and frequent water preparation.

How Does Seachem Acid Buffer Work?

Carbonate hardness (KH) helps resist changes in aquarium pH. When KH is elevated, lowering pH can be difficult because the water has a stronger buffering capacity.

Seachem Acid Buffer reacts with carbonate alkalinity, reducing KH and lowering pH. During this process, carbonate alkalinity is converted into carbon dioxide.

When combined with Seachem Alkaline Buffer, aquarists can establish a more controlled balance between pH and alkalinity, particularly when preparing RO or RO/DI water.

Recommended Dosage

According to Seachem's instructions, to lower pH:

¼ teaspoon (2 g) per 80 L (20 US gallons)

Dose daily until the desired pH is reached, monitoring pH and KH throughout the process.

This dosage reduces alkalinity by approximately 0.6 dKH. Water with particularly high carbonate hardness may require additional adjustment.

For gradual pH adjustment, especially in soft or poorly buffered water, Seachem recommends using Acid Buffer together with Alkaline Buffer.

Using Acid Buffer with Alkaline Buffer

Seachem provides the following weight ratios as starting points for targeting specific pH values when using both products together:

Acid Buffer Alkaline Buffer Target pH
1 part 1.3 parts 6.5
1 part 2 parts 7.0
1 part 2.5 parts 7.5
1 part 4 parts 8.0

These ratios are based on RO or RO/DI water. Tap water may require different ratios depending on its existing KH and buffering capacity. Measure and adjust carefully.

Important: Avoid Sudden pH Changes Rapid changes in pH and carbonate hardness can stress aquarium fish, shrimp, and other livestock. Always test your water before and after dosing. Where possible, prepare and stabilize replacement water before adding it to an occupied aquarium. Acid Buffer is not a substitute for a regulated CO₂ injection system.

Aquascaper's Tip

Before lowering aquarium pH, measure both pH and KH to understand your starting water chemistry. Aquariums using active aquasoil may already have low KH and naturally acidic water. In these setups, additional acidification may be unnecessary. Stable, species-appropriate water parameters are more important than achieving a particular pH number.

Safety: Causes serious eye irritation. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Keep out of reach of children. Follow all manufacturer safety and handling instructions.
