Description

Microsorum pteropus is a water fern that grows 15-30 cm tall and should be grown on wood or stone (attach with fishing line until it has gained a hold). If it is planted in the bottom, do not cover the rhizome because it will rot.

Natural History

Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java fern after the Indonesian island of Java, can be found in Malaysia, Thailand and some regions of China. It is a highly variable plant with several different geographic varieties that vary in leaf size and shape. Found in its natural habitat growing attached to roots and rocks, it can grow in both fully and partially submerged environs.

Pro Tips

This plant is easy to propagate by splitting the horizontal rhizome. Sometimes plantlets start to grow on the leaf edges and if you leave these intact long enough, you'll get a plant you can detatch and grow. Note that the black spots under the leaves are sporangia (reproductive organs) and not signs of disease as many believe.

Type: Rhizomatous
Origin: Asia
Growth Rate: Slow
Light Demand: Low
CO2: Low

    Excellent and Hardy

Came in beautifully, a super hardy plant, as a beginner in planted tanks, I would say this is a must for beginners.

    Potted java fern

Plant was in excellent condition when I got it, it had already been held up twice as long as it normally is and the plant was in great condition. Still healthy and very hardy. Plant has been in my 32.5gal cichlid tank + cray fish and they have been destroying any plants with weak stems but the java fern has just exploded with vibrant green and has quickly turned into one of my favourite plants in my tank. 100% recommend them and I will be purchasing more in the future.

    Great!

The java fern came in a large bunch with beautiful, long, full leaves. There was some brown spotting but that didn't seem to affect the over-all health of the plant which is just thriving! I have bought java fern twice before from aquarium specialty stores and both times they were disasters. However, this plant that I bought from Aquascaperoom, has been in my tank for more than a week now and looks better every day. VERY happy customer!
