Description

Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam'

Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' is a distinctive aquarium plant prized for its compact, grass-like rosette and fine, bright green foliage. Its narrow leaves radiate outward from the centre of the plant, creating a clean, symmetrical appearance that stands out beautifully against rocks, driftwood, carpeting plants, and darker foliage.

Unlike many Eriocaulon species that are known for being demanding, Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' is considered one of the more approachable Eriocaulon varieties. With good lighting, consistent nutrients, and stable aquarium conditions, it can develop into an attractive compact rosette suitable for both dedicated aquascapes and planted community aquariums.

Its relatively small size makes it particularly useful in the foreground to midground, where individual plants or small groups can be used to create detailed grassy accents without forming a traditional carpet.

Compact Grass-Like Rosette Fine green leaves radiate from a compact centre, giving Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' a distinctive starburst appearance that adds texture and detail to foreground and midground planting.

Why Choose Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam'?

  • Distinctive compact rosette with fine, grass-like foliage.
  • Bright green colour provides excellent contrast against stone and darker plants.
  • Excellent accent plant for foreground and midground placement.
  • Well suited to Nature Aquarium and detailed aquascaping layouts.
  • More approachable than many traditionally demanding Eriocaulon species.
  • Can produce additional plantlets as a healthy specimen matures.

Care & Placement

Placement: Foreground to midground.

Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended for compact, healthy growth.

COâ‚‚: Recommended for stronger growth, compact form, and best overall appearance.

Substrate: A nutrient-rich planted aquarium substrate is recommended to support its root system.

Fertilization: Benefits from consistent macro and micronutrient availability, including adequate trace elements.

Maintenance: Remove older or damaged outer leaves near the base while avoiding damage to the central growing point.

How to Plant Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam'

Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' should be planted directly into the aquarium substrate. Its compact rosette makes careful planting important so that the roots are secure without burying the central growing point.

  • Carefully remove any growing media from around the roots.
  • Gently separate individual plants if multiple healthy rosettes are present.
  • Use aquascaping tweezers to insert the roots into the substrate.
  • Keep the centre or crown of the rosette above the substrate.
  • Allow enough space around each plant for the foliage to spread naturally.
Don't Bury the Centre of the Rosette Plant the roots securely in the substrate while keeping the central growing point exposed. Burying the crown too deeply can interfere with healthy new growth.

Aquascaping with Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam'

The structured, radial growth of Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' makes it an excellent accent plant. Rather than using it as a continuous carpet, try positioning individual rosettes or small groups between stones, along pathways, or at transitions between foreground and taller midground plants.

Its fine bright green foliage contrasts beautifully with broad-leaved plants such as Cryptocoryne, Anubias, and Bucephalandra. It can also be combined with carpeting plants such as Monte Carlo to create small grassy focal points emerging from a lower foreground.

Is Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' Difficult to Grow?

Eriocaulon species have a reputation for being challenging aquarium plants, but Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' is generally considered more forgiving than many other members of the group. It is still best suited to an aquarium where lighting, fertilization, and water conditions are kept reasonably consistent.

For its best appearance, we recommend good lighting, a nutrient-rich substrate, and supplemental COâ‚‚. Under favourable conditions, the plant maintains a compact form and develops the dense, fine foliage that makes it so distinctive.

Aquascaper's Tip Use Eriocaulon sp. 'Vietnam' as a small focal point rather than hiding it among dense stem plants. Its symmetrical rosette is most noticeable when surrounded by lower carpeting plants, open substrate, or contrasting hardscape.
