Ophiopogon japonicus – Mondo Grass
Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as Mondo Grass, is an attractive grass-like plant featuring narrow, arching, deep green leaves that form dense, compact clumps. Its clean, grassy appearance makes it an excellent choice for creating natural transitions and lush terrestrial planting around water features.
Despite its grass-like appearance and its occasional sale as an aquarium plant, Mondo Grass is not a true aquatic plant and should not be permanently grown fully submerged. Instead, it is best suited to paludariums, ripariums, terrariums, Wabi-Kusa-inspired displays, and other humid layouts where its roots can remain moist while the foliage grows above the water.

Important – Not a Fully Aquatic Plant Ophiopogon japonicus is not suitable for permanent full submersion in an aquarium. Although it may remain attractive underwater for a period of time, long-term submerged growth can eventually result in deterioration. For best long-term results, grow Mondo Grass with its foliage above the waterline.

Mondo Grass prefers a moist but appropriately aerated root zone. In a paludarium, it can be positioned near the waterline where humidity remains high while the leaves are allowed to grow above the water.
Avoid permanently placing the entire plant underwater. When designing a paludarium or similar display, position the crown and foliage above the waterline while providing sufficient moisture around the roots.

How to Plant Mondo Grass
Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently remove excess growing material from around the roots. The plant can be kept as a larger clump or carefully divided into smaller sections depending on the layout.
Plant the roots into a moist terrestrial substrate while keeping the crown of the plant near or slightly above the substrate surface. Avoid burying the crown deeply.
When used beside an aquatic section, position the plant so the root zone remains consistently moist while the majority of the foliage remains above the waterline.
Paludarium & Riparium Use
Mondo Grass is especially effective when planted around rocks, driftwood, waterfalls, streams, and the edges of aquatic sections. Its narrow foliage can soften the transition between terrestrial hardscape and open water while maintaining a clean, natural appearance.
Several plants can be grouped together to create a dense grassy area, or smaller divisions can be positioned between rocks and other plants to produce a more irregular, naturalistic layout.
The dark green foliage pairs particularly well with mosses, ferns, creeping plants, and lighter green terrestrial vegetation, making it a useful supporting plant in heavily planted displays.
