Description

Microsorum pteropus (Java Fern)

Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is one of the most popular and reliable aquarium plants in Canada. Valued for its long, arching green leaves and exceptional hardiness, Java Fern is widely used in freshwater planted aquariums and Aquascaping layouts across the country. It thrives in low to moderate light and is well suited for beginners, low-tech tanks, and established displays alike.

Planting note: Java Fern is a rhizome plant and should not be planted in substrate. Attach it to driftwood or rock using thread or aquarium-safe glue.
Burying the rhizome will cause rot.

Why Java Fern Is a Favourite in Canadian Aquariums

  • Extremely hardy and adaptable to a wide range of water conditions
  • Low light aquarium plant ideal for shaded areas
  • Slow, manageable growth with minimal maintenance
  • Classic leaf shape suitable for nearly all aquascaping styles
  • Excellent epiphyte plant for driftwood and stone hardscape

Care & Placement

  • Placement: Foreground to midground, attached to hardscape
  • Lighting: Low to moderate
  • COâ‚‚: Not required
  • Water Parameters: Very adaptable, ideal for community tanks
  • Maintenance: Minimal—remove older leaves as needed

Aquascaping & Aquarium Use

  • Perfect for low-tech planted aquariums without COâ‚‚ injection.
  • Commonly used in shrimp tanks and community fish aquariums.
  • Works well in nature-style aquascapes and natural freshwater layouts.
