Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' is one of the most popular carpeting plants for freshwater planted aquariums. Its small, rounded bright green leaves grow along creeping stems, gradually spreading across the substrate to create a lush, natural-looking foreground carpet.
Monte Carlo is especially popular in Nature Aquarium, Iwagumi, nano aquarium, and high-tech aquascapes. Compared with some of the more demanding miniature carpeting plants, Monte Carlo is relatively forgiving while still producing the dense green carpet aquascapers are looking for.
Supplied as a Tissue Culture, the plant is grown under sterile laboratory conditions and arrives free from snails, algae, and unwanted pests. Each cup can be divided into numerous smaller portions and planted throughout the foreground to establish a carpet.
Placement: Foreground / carpeting plant.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended for compact, horizontal growth.
COâ‚‚: Recommended. Monte Carlo can survive in some non-COâ‚‚ aquariums, but supplemental COâ‚‚ significantly improves spreading, density, and overall carpet formation.
Substrate: A fine-grained, nutrient-rich planted aquarium substrate is ideal.
Fertilization: Benefits from consistent macro and micronutrient availability.
Maintenance: Trim established growth periodically to maintain a compact carpet and prevent excessively thick layers from developing.

Properly dividing and spacing Monte Carlo when first planting can make a significant difference in how quickly it establishes an even carpet.
Rather than planting the entire tissue culture cup as one clump, divide it into many smaller portions and distribute them throughout the foreground. Each portion can then spread outward, allowing multiple areas of the carpet to establish simultaneously.
With adequate light, nutrients, and COâ‚‚, the creeping stems begin filling the spaces between each planted portion. As the carpet becomes established, occasional trimming encourages compact growth and helps maintain the clean, manicured appearance Monte Carlo is known for.
Monte Carlo is particularly effective when planted around aquascaping stone and driftwood. Allowing small patches to creep naturally around the base of hardscape can create a softer and more established appearance than a perfectly uniform carpet.
It is also an excellent choice for Iwagumi-style aquariums, where a broad green foreground helps emphasize the shape, scale, and placement of the primary stones.
