Description

Bucephalandra 'Red Mini' – Tissue Culture

Bucephalandra 'Red Mini' Tissue Culture is a beautiful miniature aquatic plant known for its compact growth, textured foliage, and attractive reddish-bronze to deep green leaves. Its small size and unique appearance make it an excellent choice for adding fine detail, colour, and contrast to freshwater planted aquariums.

Native to the tropical waterways of Borneo, Bucephalandra species naturally grow attached to rocks and wood in flowing streams. Like other Bucephalandra varieties, 'Red Mini' is an epiphytic plant that develops a creeping rhizome and should be attached to aquarium hardscape rather than buried in substrate.

Supplied in tissue culture form, this plant is grown under controlled laboratory conditions, providing clean, healthy plant material without unwanted snails, algae, or aquarium pests.

Miniature Size, Beautiful Colour & Texture Bring fine detail to your aquascape with compact Bucephalandra foliage featuring rich green, bronze, and reddish tones. Perfect for attaching to stones, driftwood, and intricate nano aquarium layouts.

Key Features

  • Compact Miniature Growth: Ideal for nano aquariums, foreground accents, and detailed hardscape arrangements.
  • Attractive Foliage: Small, textured leaves may display green, bronze, and reddish tones depending on growing conditions.
  • Easy-Care Epiphyte: Grows attached to driftwood, aquarium stones, and other hardscape surfaces.
  • Low Light Tolerant: Adapts well to low and moderate aquarium lighting.
  • COâ‚‚ Optional: Can grow without injected COâ‚‚, although supplementation may improve overall growth.
  • Slow-Growing: Maintains a compact appearance with minimal trimming.
  • Clean Tissue Culture: Laboratory-grown plantlets help minimize the introduction of unwanted aquarium pests and algae.

How to Prepare & Plant Tissue Culture

  1. Remove from the Cup: Carefully remove the Bucephalandra plantlets from their tissue culture container.
  2. Rinse the Gel: Gently rinse away all nutrient gel using clean, aquarium-safe water.
  3. Separate into Portions: Divide the plant mass into smaller groups, taking care not to damage the delicate rhizomes and roots.
  4. Attach to Hardscape: Secure the plantlets to aquarium stones or driftwood using aquarium-safe glue or fine thread.
  5. Allow to Establish: Over time, the roots will naturally attach to the hardscape surface.
Important: Do Not Bury the Rhizome Bucephalandra grows from a horizontal rhizome that must remain exposed to aquarium water. Burying the rhizome beneath substrate can cause it to rot. Attach the plant to hardscape or keep the rhizome above the substrate surface.

Aquascaping with Bucephalandra 'Red Mini'

The miniature growth habit of Bucephalandra 'Red Mini' makes it particularly useful for creating detailed, natural-looking aquascapes. Attach small portions to rock crevices, driftwood branches, or shaded areas to create a mature appearance with minimal maintenance.

Its textured foliage provides an attractive contrast against fine-leaved stem plants, mosses, and lighter green aquatic plants. Multiple small portions can also be arranged throughout an aquascape to create a cohesive, natural appearance.

Aquascaper's Tip Bucephalandra is a slow-growing plant that benefits from stable aquarium conditions and gentle water circulation. Avoid excessive lighting, which may encourage algae on its leaves. Newly introduced tissue culture plantlets may temporarily lose some foliage while adapting to submerged growth; healthy rhizomes can produce new leaves as they establish.

Tissue Culture Benefits

  • Grown under controlled, sterile laboratory conditions.
  • Helps prevent introducing unwanted snails, algae, and aquarium pests.
  • Contains multiple plantlets that can be divided for aquascaping.
  • Excellent for establishing clean, new planted aquarium layouts.

Add miniature foliage, subtle reddish colour, and natural texture to your planted aquarium with Bucephalandra 'Red Mini' Tissue Culture, available in Canada at Aquascaperoom.
