Hygrophila pinnatifida obtains brown, patched leaves on the surface with a distinctive burgundy colour underneath. It creates horizontal side shoots and the top shoots should be pinched out in order to maintain compact and attractive growth. The horizontal side shoots easily attach to both wood and rocks.

Natural History

It is native to Bangladesh, India, China and Malaysia, and has also been introduced to the US states of Florida, Texas and possibly Virginia. Indian waterweed first appeared in the aquarium trade in 1945 under the name "oriental ludwigia".

Pro Tips

Typically stem plants are planted in the substrate, but Hygrophila pinnatifida does very well attached to or wedged into rock and wood. As a result you can use this throughout the aquarium depending on the height of the hardscape to which it is attached.
