The Amazon Sword, from South America, is undemanding and beautiful, and becomes 20-50 cm tall. A nutritious bottom promotes growth, but the plant needs pruning to prevent it depriving plants underneath of light. Amazon swords do well even in poorly illuminated aquariums, as it grows towards the light. It is a hardy and easy solitary plant for both beginners and the more experienced with quite large aquariums.

Natural History

Echinodorus, the Amazon sword plant or burhead, is a genus of plants in the family Alismataceae and distributed in the Western Hemisphere from the central United States to Argentina. Its scientific name is derived from Ancient Greek echius – rough husk, and doros – leathern bottle, alluding to ovaries, which in some species are armed with persistent styles, forming prickly head of fruit. Some of the species are commonly cultivated in artificial aquatic habitats.

Pro Tips

The leaves of emersed growth are rounder than those of submerged growth and will eventually die when the plant is put into your aquarium. To avoid having to remove leaves down the road, consider removing all but a handful of the oldest leaves before planting.
