Description

Aponogeton boivinianus is a tall growing bulb plant that originates from Madagascar. In the wild, it can be found in fast flowing water so a bit of flow in your aquarium is ideal. The plant can be characterized by the ruffled texture with new leaves appearing light green or red and older leaves turning darker olive colored. The texture and massive size of this plant makes it the perfect addition to the background of larger tanks. These are 15-20 inches tall!

Natural History

You can get a clue to the ancestry of an unknown plant by looking at the flower spike. An Aponogeton from Asia will have a single bloom while those with African heritage (including Madagascar) have multiple blooms on the same stalk. Most Asian species remain submerged year round, while the starchy tubercles of the African species are able to survive the dry season by shedding their leaves and going dormant. Most Asian species have a dormant period too, but this is temperature related, not a response to drought conditions.

Pro Tips

The leaves of Aponogeton boivinianus die back, don't immediately dispose of the bulb. It may be that something triggered it to go dormant in which case it will start growing again in a few weeks or months.
